Who you invoice
Clients
Add the businesses and people you invoice. Their details are used to raise ordinary invoices — the kind you issue to your customer — and merge into any contract you paper the relationship with.
A client does not need an Invoicer account. The engagement handshake is the section 71 prior agreement, which self-billing requires because the customer issues on the supplier's behalf. An ordinary invoice is issued by you to them and needs no prior consent, so a client you add here is ready to invoice straight away. If they later sign up, the record can be linked to their account and the relationship carries on.

An invoice needs your client’s legal name, address and VAT number to be right. Pull them from a source rather than retyping them — you can edit anything before saving.
Checked against the EU VIES register, which returns the registered name and address behind the number.
Self-billing works the other way round and still needs the full handshake: the supplier must agree in advance (s71(1)(a)) before you can raise invoices on their behalf. Use Engagements for that.
